Chapter 346 Ancient Battlefield
byUda Gan continued, "No matter what fate has in store, we must take control of our choices and prepare for both outcomes. Tai Kun, pass your current duties to Ryuji, and you personally head north. If Wang Feng does not come back alive, we must not delude ourselves. Aurora City will only get tougher. Perhaps we will have no choice but to seek shelter with our northern allies."
Tai Kun nodded in agreement but couldn't help asking, "What if Wang Feng comes back?"
"Then he could be the spark that could ignite the southern orcs' rise. I will speak with him again."
"Elder, is Wang Feng really up to the task? He's just a puppet, after all. Can he really protect us under the pressure from the city lord?" Lasha asked. He was the leader of the orc tribe in Dala City. Since most of the orcs in Dala relied on Aurora City's freight for their livelihood, he spent more time in Aurora City than in Dala.
"I trust Wang Feng," Tai Kun said with certainty. He dismissed the rumors outright.
"Not necessarily! If he were truly capable, Thunder Dragon would've rescued him by now."
Uda Gan waved his hand and said, "Let's not jump to conclusions. At the very least, through him, we can gauge Karida's and Thunder Dragon's stances. If the current situation can be maintained, we can hold out for now. But if even the minimum standard of survival is denied to us, then we'll have no choice but to act..."
Uda Gan quickly delegated tasks and adjourned the meeting.
After the orc leaders had left, Su Mei'er tugged at Uda Gan's sleeve and asked, "Grandfather, why do you think so highly of Wang Feng? Is it because he's eloquent and a genius with runes?"
Her grandfather wouldn't favor Wang Feng just for his 'Doomsday Funeral.'
Uda Gan smiled at Su Mei'er and shook his head. Su Mei'er was a mixed-blood of orc, human, and the Eight Tribes. She had been beautiful and intelligent since childhood and was his best successor. "He may not be capable now, but we can back him. This is a human world, and we must accept that. Resisting is futile; it's the way of the world... As for Wang Feng, there's more to him than meets the eye."
Su Mei'er thought for a moment but still couldn't figure out what made Wang Feng so special. Uda Gan simply smiled and didn't answer her question further.
In truth, the southern orcs were running out of time.
Back then, they had thought that relying on the League of Blades could change the world. However, after the war ended, the orcs' role in the League of Blades dwindled, and their living conditions worsened. More and more orcs had to take on the lowest jobs just to barely support their families, effectively losing their freedom.
The new city lord's true intention was likely that he found the orcs an eyesore, dragging down the status of Aurora City...
This ancient battlefield was vast, and the flow of time was abnormal. After walking just a few miles southeast, the sky gradually brightened, and the space seemed to "come alive."
A vast energy spread across the heavens and earth, and the cycle of day and night reversed, as if time had turned back to the dawn of a new day.
The scattered, silent corpses on the ground disappeared, replaced by armies standing in formation, solemnly facing each other in the wilderness.
"Moo..." A deep, resonant sound echoed from the sky, where a dozen or so massive sea demons, each dozens of meters long, hovered in the distance.
These creatures were not only enormous but also exuded a terrifying soul pressure, at least at the ghost level. Behind them, they pulled enormous war chariots, each carrying thousands of sea people warriors, tens of thousands of soldiers standing in solemn silence.
On the opposite hill stood the allied forces of humans, orcs, and the Eight Tribes.
The human army was vast, numbering a hundred thousand, but they appeared far more primitive than today's forces. There were no sophisticated rune cannons or rows of gunners. The front lines were composed of pure martial artists, guarding massive catapults over ten meters tall, each loaded with boulders weighing thousands of pounds, drenched in oil. Behind the martial artists were even more primitive groups of wizards—ice wizards, fire wizards, thunder wizards, and earth wizards—all mixed together, far less organized than the current formations of the League of Blades and the Nine Gods. Yet, each wizard exuded a powerful aura, wielding a variety of staffs.
The armies of the Eight Tribes and the orcs were much smaller in number but significantly more powerful. The Yaksha, Mahoraga, and Celestials formed a formation of about three thousand, standing ready on the right flank of the human army. These were the elite of the elite, at least at the Tiger Peak level, with many warriors already reaching the ghost level, making up at least a third of the Eight Tribes' forces. The orc side had around ten to twenty thousand warriors, vastly different from the weak and lowly status of orcs today. These orcs appeared incredibly powerful, all of them bloodline awakeners. Their bodies trembled, their strong and expanding muscles easily bursting through their armor.
"Roar! Roar! Roar!" They bellowed, their powerful fists pounding the ground, creating a drum-like resonance that shook the earth, challenging the sea people's formation in the sky.
"Whoosh!"
In the sea people's formation, the flag officer waved the dragon banner.
"Kill!"
The sea demons in the sky roared in unison, sending massive sound waves sweeping down toward the allied forces. The wizards in the human army immediately unleashed a barrage of spells to counter the attack.
Fireballs, ice arrows, and thunderbolts converged in the air, clashing with the sound waves. The sky erupted in a dazzling display of light as immense energy exploded.
"Kill! Kill! Kill!"
The wizards held their ground against the first wave of attacks, and the land coalition roared in unison, beginning their counterattack. They set fire to the massive boulders drenched in oil on the catapults, cut the ropes binding them, and then enormous fireballs, like meteors, were hurled towards the sea monsters in the sky.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Arcane lights flickered in the sky, and thick beams of arcane energy converged, instantly shattering the incoming boulders, which exploded in mid-air, scattering sparks that immediately set the ground ablaze.
"The grand arcane arts of the mermaids!" Old Wang and Fu Liye were at the center of the battlefield. Although they were cloaked in stealth and no one attacked them, dodging the 'stray bullets' raining from the sky was headache enough.
This was an ancient battlefield, from an era when the sea people were not yet confined. The war chariots drawn by the sea monsters were manned entirely by mermaid warriors, who excelled in arcane arts. While defending against the massive fireballs, they still managed to threaten the land coalition below.
The sea monster chariots, with their commanding height, held an absolute advantage in the air. But at this moment, a vast glow emanated from the rear of the human army.
Roar! Roar! Roar!
It was a summoning array, the human ace soul beast master corps. Gigantic ghost-level soul beasts with terrifying auras materialized behind the army formation. There was a one-legged Kui Niu towering like a mountain, a massive swimming serpent stretching dozens of meters long, and a humanoid demon ape with a single horn and blood-red eyes, towering thirty meters tall, wielding an ancient tree as a club, radiating the fearsome aura of a primordial deity. Even Fu Liye, at the peak of ghost level, felt a shiver of fear from afar, clearly the leader of these soul beasts.
It took a step forward, vaulting over the human army formation, its massive body incredibly sturdy, withstanding the mermaids' arcane assaults. Its club aimed at a sea monster, crashing down fiercely, while the other terrifying soul beasts followed, surging towards the sea monsters in the sky.
A massive sea monster was the first to take the brunt, struck dizzy by the humanoid demon ape's club, it let out a mournful cry as it plummeted downwards. On the other sea monster chariots, bright lights flashed as the sea people summoned equally colossal sea demons, including a giant squid with tentacles reaching the sky, its thick suction-cupped tentacles tightly coiled around the demon ape's arm. The battle on both sides fully erupted into chaos.
The sky instantly transformed into a battlefield of giant beasts. Human soul beasts had always been the primary force against the sea people's massive sea demons. The two sides were evenly matched, and the sea monster chariots couldn't break through for the moment.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! On the sea monster chariots, thousands of warriors jumped down like dumplings, crashing to the ground like small meteors, then charging towards the land coalition. Once they broke through the coalition's defense line, the soul beast masters hiding behind would be at their mercy.
This was the ground battlefield, not as earth-shattering as the giant beasts' aerial combat, but even more intense and brutal.
"Kill!"
The Sea Dragon Clan warriors, about two meters tall with sharp, thin, and long ears like cicada wings, wielded sharp swords, their sea battle aura transforming into sword beams, slashing at mid-range. The army formation was instantly crisscrossed with sword energy. The whale clan sea warriors were even taller, all over three meters, with god-like strength in their hands, capable of taking on ten at once. The human martial artists' front line was thrown into chaos, but fortunately, the Eight Tribes and orc coalition on both sides held firm.
The Eight Tribes warriors had pure soul power and heaven-defying combat skills, engaging the Sea Dragon Clan warriors without falling behind. The orcs with awakened bloodlines were immensely strong, holding off the whale clan warriors. The human army's catapults and wizards provided long-range attacks, covering the aerial soul beast corps and countering the mermaids' arcane arts. The three allied forces worked together, stabilizing the front line. Both sides entered a close-quarters, white-hot phase of combat, fighting so fiercely that the sky darkened, the sun and moon lost their light, and blood flowed like rivers, making Old Wang's scalp tingle.
"This is the battle between the sea people and the land from ancient times. Although the ancient human soul seeds and cultivation systems weren't as systematic as now, the primitive bloodlines made some individual combatants extremely powerful, with truly terrifying primordial soul beasts... Ancient soul beast variants, the first appearance of runes, the great sea-land war..." Fu Liye held Wang Feng's hand, navigating through the chaotic battlefield. Although protected by stealth cloaks, the stray bullets were too numerous, and being in the central area of the battle, even with extreme caution, Fu Liye had to use spatial jumps several times to escape danger. Yet, his eyes showed no fear, only excitement: "This must be the era just after the Supreme Sage Teacher invented runes. This illusion must be related to the Supreme Sage Teacher!"
Whoosh!
As he spoke, a terrifying sword beam slashed through the air. It was a yaksha fighting a Sea Dragon Clan warrior, its body glowing with black patterns. Though not as perfect as Hei Wukai's true ghost yaksha form, it already bore the nascent form of ghost yaksha patterns, with formidable strength, definitely at the peak of ghost level. That sword slash made even the void tremble!
Fu Liye's eyelids twitched, a purple card flashing in his hand, just managing to pull Old Wang away tens of meters before the space was split, averting disaster.
"Damn..." Old Wang was truly envious; this should be the protagonist's ability: "Brother Fu, this move is a life-saving skill!"
"Not bad," Fu Liye was modest, pulling Wang Feng forward as they were almost out of the main battlefield: "But against top experts, it's not very useful."
Damn... not very useful... Old Wang was speechless. If I could learn this, I could go anywhere in the world.
By now, the two had passed the main battlefield and stopped on a small hill. Looking back, they saw mountain-like soul beasts and giant demons fighting in the sky, darkening the heavens; on the ground, fires raged, and the sea people and land coalition fought fiercely, blood flowing like rivers. Warriors on both sides were dying continuously, with cries of agony, shouts of battle, the smell of blood, and the scent of fire and stone, creating a scene of a living hell, a world-ending apocalypse.
"It's just as well there are only two of us. In such a battlefield illusion, the more people, the more dangerous," Fu Liye sighed in relief: "We're just the first wave. After your previous companions leave, the Nine Gods and the League of Blades will likely send experts to sweep through. Haha, when they charge into this god-like battlefield, I wonder how shocked they'll look."
"Trap one, count one!" Old Wang didn't care; the higher-ups of the Nine Gods and the League of Blades were mostly no good.
Fu Liye was startled, exchanged a look with Old Wang, and both burst into laughter.
"This is just the first level, let's keep moving."
Ignoring the deafening battle cries behind them, the two continued forward. Ahead lay a vast, complex terrain of wild mountains and marshes, not as chaotic as the ancient battlefield, but filled with numerous terrifying beasts. Strangely, there were also many giant monster statues, like Nagas and even stranger creatures from the Nine Heavens Annals. These statues were enormous, seemingly not human-made, as in this era of sea-land dominance, humans hadn't yet fully ruled the world, with only a few major cities, let alone the resources to carve such massive stone statues in the mountains.
"It's said that before the sea-land dominance, the world was ruled by another terrifying race. These statues might be their remnants. Even now, in some ancient ruins, you can see these statues."
"What race was that?" Old Wang asked curiously. His designed world of Yu Jiu Tian started from Wang Meng's era; anything older, he didn't know.
Fu Liye shook his head: "Perhaps ancient giants, or some variant. There's too little information from that era, no human-readable literature. The only consensus is that they must have been very tall, judging from the statues and some ruined palace remains. But no matter how powerful, they're in the past... Be careful, don't touch those statues, they might come alive like the Naga in the previous level... Too late, run!"
