Chapter 079 【Metamorphosis】
by 我本瘋狂After several police officers dumped Brother Tiger and his men into the police car like garbage, Yan Zhengchun wore a flattering smile and asked, "Mr. Gu, is there anything else you need?"
"No, you can go." Although Yan Zhengchun now acted like a pug in front of Gu Feng, Gu Feng didn't like him much. He understood that Yan Zhengchun’s deference was entirely because Yan Zhengchun had guessed his identity was unusual.
With Gu Feng's reply, Yan Zhengchun said goodbye and left by car.
In the darkness, police car lights flashed continuously, and the wail of the sirens was especially piercing.
Watching the police car disappear at the end of the street, Gu Feng looked away and thought to himself, "I seem to have changed."
"Gu Feng." Just as Gu Feng was musing to himself, Xia Wei’s voice came from downstairs.
In the dark night, Xia Wei called Gu Feng’s name while waving her small hand. Under the moonlight, her brows were slightly furrowed, as if she were worried about something.
Gu Feng gave a slight shake of his head and hurried over to Xia Wei. Before he could speak, Xia Wei asked with concern, "Gu Feng, you... you didn’t kill them, did you?"
Having witnessed Gu Feng’s methods during the kidnapping case, Xia Wei knew that when it came to evildoers, Gu Feng didn't know the meaning of mercy.
Gu Feng shook his head gently and said, "No, I handed them over to the police."
Seeing the complicated smile at the corner of Gu Feng’s mouth, Xia Wei keenly sensed that he seemed different from before, though she couldn’t pinpoint exactly how—she just felt it through a woman’s sharp intuition.
Noticing Xia Wei’s puzzled look, Gu Feng realized his mood had piqued her curiosity. He smiled and said, "Let’s go upstairs."
Xia Wei nodded lightly without saying anything.
At Chen Minjun’s home, Chen Guisheng and his wife both looked upset, especially Chen Minjun’s mother, whose face was white as a sheet, clearly still shaken from the earlier shock.
Seeing Gu Feng and Xia Wei walk in, Chen Guisheng blurted out, "Mr. Gu, thank you for today."
"You’re welcome, Uncle Chen." Gu Feng shook his head, and noticing Chen Minjun’s mother’s expression, he knew there would be no meal. After all, in Chen Minjun’s household, her mother always did the cooking.
Xia Wei seemed to have picked up on the same thing and smiled slightly, saying, "Minjun, take your mother to her room to rest. I’ll cook."
Chen Minjun and Xia Wei were good friends, so she readily agreed with Xia Wei’s suggestion. She gently put down the water glass in her hand, helped her mother up, and said, "Mom, let me help you lie down in the bedroom for a while?"
"Minjun, don’t worry about me. Go and attend to Mr. Gu." Chen Minjun’s mother forced a faint smile, though her eyes still showed intense fear. Clearly, for someone her age, the actions of Brother Tiger and his men were really too much.
"Auntie, you go rest for a while. I’ll just chat with Uncle in the living room," Gu Feng said with a slight smile.
Hearing this, Chen Minjun’s mother didn't argue any further. She forced another smile and, supported by Chen Minjun, walked into the bedroom.
"Ah! It’s all my fault!" Chen Guisheng said with guilt, slapping himself hard across the face as he spoke.
"Smack!"
Chen Guisheng’s slap was fierce and loud.
Gu Feng quickly stood up to stop Chen Guisheng from hurting himself. "Uncle Chen, don’t do that!"
"Ah." Chen Guisheng sighed again, picked up a cigarette from the table, and began smoking gloomily.
Unlike usual, Gu Feng also took a cigarette, put it in his mouth, and took a deep drag.
Through today’s events, Gu Feng keenly realized that he had gone through some subtle changes recently. Though slight, he could sense it himself.
During his time in the military, he had always imposed extremely strict discipline on himself. That was why, after coming to Hong Kong, he willingly accepted legal punishment for injuring Zhou Mingwei. Even later, when he crossed the Xiang family, he refused to use his background to deal with them, opting instead for "proper" procedures.
But today’s incident suddenly made him realize that he had, inadvertently, used some methods that violated discipline.
On the sofa, the two men puffed away, smoke swirling around them. Neither paid it any mind, each lost in their own thoughts.
After settling her mother in the bedroom, Chen Minjun fetched a mop from the bathroom. Seeing Gu Feng and Chen Guisheng both deep in thought in the living room, she didn’t disturb them but quietly went into the bedroom to mop the floor.
The outside world is different from the military. Perhaps I should change some things to adapt to this society.
Gu Feng muttered to himself inwardly, then stubbed out his cigarette, glanced at Chen Guisheng, and said, "Uncle Chen, just in case, why don’t you move to a new place tomorrow?"
Chen Guisheng nodded blankly, his brows tightly knitted together.
The family’s savings had long been lost to his gambling, and now they could barely make ends meet. Where would they find extra money to move?
Seemingly sensing Chen Guisheng’s predicament, Gu Feng smiled slightly and said, "Uncle Chen, money isn’t an issue. I can lend it to you first."
"Mr. Gu..." Startled by Gu Feng’s words, Chen Guisheng’s heart trembled. He opened his mouth to say something but found himself unable to utter a single word.
Gu Feng smiled and waved his hand, then stood up and walked toward the kitchen.
In the kitchen, Xia Wei was wearing an apron and chopping vegetables. At the same time, a wok was heating on the gas stove, the oil inside already hot.
"Need any help?" Gu Feng asked while turning on the faucet to wash his hands.
Gu Feng’s question took Xia Wei by surprise. Clearly, she hadn’t expected him to enter the kitchen.
As she was momentarily stunned, she seemed to remember something and, in a panic, quickly tossed the vegetables from the cutting board into the wok, causing a loud sizzling sound.
Xia Wei flipped the vegetables a few times with the spatula and then smiled, "No need. Go back and sit in the living room. The kitchen is where women belong."
Gu Feng didn’t say anything but walked straight to the cutting board, picked up a knife, and began chopping swiftly.
Compared to Xia Wei’s chopping, Gu Feng’s knife skills were clearly superior. Each cut was nearly identical in force and angle, and he worked at a rapid pace.
Watching this, Xia Wei’s mouth fell open in astonishment.
"I cook every day," Gu Feng said with a slight smile, then placed several green peppers together and skillfully sliced them into strips.
"Don’t you have a girlfriend?" Xia Wei asked instinctively.
