    Chapter Index

"Mr. Gu." As soon as Gu Feng stepped out of the gym, he heard someone call his name and instinctively looked toward the voice.

Off in the distance, Gu Feng saw someone waving at him.

The man was wearing a yellow suit, a cigarette in hand. Seeing Gu Feng turn around, he smiled and waved.

After a moment's thought, Gu Feng recalled the man's name. This guy was named Hu Hua, a teacher from Gu Feng's office.

Although he didn't know why Hu Hua was waiting for him at the gym entrance, Gu Feng still walked over and said, "Mr. Hu, is there something you need?"

"Mr. Gu, well, here's the thing. Since you just arrived today, I discussed it with the other teachers, and we decided to get lunch together. It's a good opportunity for everyone to get to know each other," Hu Hua said with a smile, offering him a Marlboro from his pack.

"Thanks for going to the trouble, Mr. Hu," Gu Feng replied with a slight smile. "I don't smoke, thanks."

Hu Hua awkwardly slipped the cigarette back into the pack, but the faint smile on Gu Feng's face pleased him. That morning, Hu Hua had observed Gu Feng in the office and noticed his expression had been consistently serious, so he hadn't struck up a conversation.

Now, seeing Gu Feng smile indicated that their relationship had taken a step forward.

"Mr. Gu, let's go," Hu Hua said, tucking the pack away with a smile, then leading the way.

Hu Hua had been at Zifeng Middle School for three years. Even though he was still just a regular teacher, he was on good terms with many of the school's administrators. Gu Feng was a new teacher, but he was the only one personally escorted to the office by Principal Xu Qin.

In Hu Hua's view, Xu Qin was known for her strictness at Zifeng Middle School, demanding high standards from the teachers and essentially being the top authority at the school. Since such a capable and shrewd woman had personally escorted Gu Feng, Gu Feng must have some serious connections.

Hu Hua had always been confident in his judgment, so to get on Gu Feng's good side, he had personally suggested that the five other teachers in the office have a meal together to welcome him.

The other five teachers, though not as calculating as Hu Hua, also felt it was appropriate to have a meal together since it was Gu Feng's first day at the school.

They were eating at the school cafeteria, located near the athletic field, a three-story building.

Along the way, Hu Hua tried to subtly pump Gu Feng for information about his background, but Gu Feng deflected his questions with polite non-answers. After several attempts, Hu Hua seemed to get the hint and quickly shifted the conversation to other topics.

When Gu Feng and Hu Hua arrived at the private room on the third floor of the school cafeteria, the other five teachers were already there.

Earlier in the office, two teachers had been teaching their classes, so Gu Feng hadn't met them. Upon entering the room, he instinctively glanced at those two unfamiliar faces.

At that moment, Gu Feng was taken slightly aback.

In Hong Kong, Gu Feng didn't know many people. However, in the private room, he realized that one of the two unfamiliar teachers was someone he had met and even spoken to before.

That person was none other than the woman wearing the floral-print dress from yesterday's kidnapping incident. You could say that during yesterday's kidnapping, that woman had left a deep impression on Gu Feng.

At the time, all the hostages were terrified of the gunmen, but only that woman remained calm, constantly reassuring the people around her.

"Mr. Gu, come, let me introduce you. This is Mr. Yang, and this is Ms. Xia," Hu Hua said, first pulling out a chair for Gu Feng, then smiling as he made the introductions.

Gu Feng forced a smile at the two and said, "Hello, I'm Gu Feng."

"Hello, Mr. Gu," both replied, standing up and smiling at Gu Feng. Among them, Ms. Xia frowned slightly, wearing a thoughtful expression.

Ms. Xia was the woman in the floral-print dress from yesterday's kidnapping incident.

Under Ms. Xia's gaze, Gu Feng instinctively averted his eyes and sat down. Clearly, Gu Feng didn't want Ms. Xia to recognize him; he didn't want to draw attention to himself.

"Ms. Xia, are you okay?" a teacher beside her asked curiously, noticing her unusual expression.

"I'm fine," Xia Wei replied, withdrawing her gaze with a smile.

"Ms. Xia, could it be that yesterday's kidnapping incident left you with some aftereffects?" a chubby, bespectacled man joked with a chuckle.

The portly man was named Qi Hui, a history teacher nicknamed "Iron Mouth Qi," known for his talkative nature.

"Qi, you portly fellow, stop making sarcastic remarks. Ms. Xia is much braver than you," a short-haired woman named Wu Xue beside Xia Wei said disdainfully. "If you were at Century Mall yesterday, forget about leading hostages to escape—you'd probably hide in the men's restroom all afternoon."

"Not the men's restroom, the women's restroom," Hu Hua chimed in, glancing affectionately at Xia Wei as he spoke.

Qi Hui didn't argue back when the two mocked him, just chuckled foolishly. Clearly, he was used to such jokes.

As for the praise from everyone, Xia Wei simply smiled without saying a word.

"By the way, Ms. Xia, tell us about yesterday's kidnapping incident. We saw the news, but the coverage was limited," one teacher suggested.

As soon as he spoke, the others chimed in agreement.

Unable to resist their urging, Xia Wei made a shocking statement: "Actually, the person who dealt with the gunmen yesterday wasn't the police." As she spoke, she secretly glanced at Gu Feng, but his expression remained unchanged, as if he wasn't the least bit interested in what she said.

In contrast to Gu Feng, the others were all shocked by Ms. Xia's words!

Especially Wu Xue, who loved gossip. Hearing Xia Wei's statement, she immediately asked, "Ms. Xia, are you saying there was someone else who rescued the hostages?"

Xia Wei withdrew her gaze and nodded gently. "That person disguised himself as a gunman, killed all the gunmen on the fourth floor of the mall, then went up to the rooftop alone and took out the rest. So, don't praise me for being brave. Compared to the real hero, I'm nothing."

"Could it be the legendary Spider-Man?" Wu Xue said with a starry-eyed expression, as if she had a particular fondness for heroic figures.

"Ms. Xia, the news reported that it was the police, didn't they?" Hu Hua raised a question.

Xia Wei replied, "When I led the hostages out, a police officer in charge asked me about that person. So, I'm sure he wasn't with the police. After all, if he were, he would have maintained contact with the person in charge." As she spoke, Xia Wei glanced at Gu Feng again, a faint smile curling at the corner of her mouth.

Gu Feng remained as before, expression serious, not speaking, just listening to everyone's opinions.

After that, the entire meal revolved around discussions of the kidnapping incident. Since Xia Wei was a hostage at the scene, she was very familiar with what happened. As a Chinese language teacher, she narrated the events vividly, captivating everyone.

Little did they know that the hero Xia Wei spoke of was sitting right beside them.
