Chapter 003 【Imposter Soldier】
byThe Century Mall kidnapping case caused a huge uproar in Hong Kong, with almost all entertainment media and newspapers reporting on the incident.
Although several hostages died in the kidnapping, the fact that all the criminals were eliminated allowed the Hong Kong police to breathe a sigh of relief under immense pressure. Major media outlets did not criticize the Hong Kong police; on the contrary, they highly praised them.
Among them, Hong Kong Police Commissioner Chen Binglong was repeatedly interviewed by reporters, quickly becoming a hero to the people of Hong Kong.
Chen Binglong was not someone who liked to take credit. He really wanted to find the true hero of the kidnapping case, but despite investing considerable manpower and resources, he was unable to discover who had single-handedly taken on the criminals that day.
In that situation, when facing reporters, Chen Binglong had to reluctantly take the credit himself. He understood that if he told the media the hero was not from the police, it would cause a huge uproar across Hong Kong, which would not be good for the police or the residents.
In a two-bedroom apartment with two living areas at Pearl Apartment, Lin Jiaying held the remote control, gazing admiringly at Chen Binglong on the TV screen. The next moment, she remembered something, turned to look at Gu Feng, who was browsing a military magazine, stuck out her lip, and said scornfully, "Gu Feng, you're not a real soldier at all!"
Hearing Lin Jiaying's words, Gu Feng frowned slightly but said nothing, his eyes still fixed on the military magazine.
"Hmph! I knew it!" Seeing that Gu Feng did not refute her, Lin Jiaying became even more confident. "Take today's kidnapping case, for example. As a soldier, you hid in the mall and didn't dare to step forward—how embarrassing is that! Look at these police officers on TV. They risked their lives to rescue the hostages and fight the criminals. They're much braver than you, a fake soldier."
At this point, Lin Jiaying thought again about having to spend the rest of her life with this cowardly country bumpkin and clenched her fists, swearing to herself that no matter what, she would find a way to make her family reject this engagement!
After dealing with the criminals, Gu Feng did not put himself in the public eye. Instead, he waited for the police and reporters to leave before changing back into his own clothes and exiting the mall. When he returned home, in response to Lin Jiaying's questions, Gu Feng only said that he had hidden in the mall all afternoon and said nothing else.
As an elite soldier, he lived by a simple creed: "A soldier should appear in the most dangerous places, not in front of the camera."
He did not want to expose himself to the camera because of the kidnapping incident.
"It's getting late. You should go to bed," Gu Feng said, raising his wrist to check his watch.
By then, the kidnapping news had ended. Lin Jiaying, worried about her future, said nothing in response to Gu Feng's words and got up to walk toward the bedroom. After Lin Jiaying returned to her bedroom, Gu Feng placed the military magazine on the coffee table, turned off the TV, and walked into the other bedroom.
Although the two had been engaged by their families, because Lin Jiaying was still a minor, they each had their own bedroom.
The next day, as dawn was breaking, Gu Feng woke from his sleep.
After checking his watch, Gu Feng quickly put on his clothes, made his bed, and went out.
The morning air was exceptionally fresh. Because it was so early, there were very few people in the apartment garden—only a few elderly people in martial arts uniforms practicing Tai Chi in the courtyard.
Breathing in the fresh morning air, Gu Feng couldn't help but miss the damp air of the jungle. Shaking his head, he set off on a jog toward the apartment entrance.
About half an hour later, Gu Feng returned to the apartment after his morning exercise.
By then, the morning sun had slowly risen from the east, its rays piercing through the clouds and scattering across the streets and alleys of Hong Kong.
When Gu Feng returned home, Lin Jiaying was still asleep.
Gu Feng did not wake Lin Jiaying. Instead, he went to the kitchen to make breakfast. Accompanied by the piercing sound of an alarm clock, there was movement in Lin Jiaying's bedroom. A few minutes later, Lin Jiaying emerged from her bedroom with disheveled hair.
By the time Lin Jiaying finished washing up, Gu Feng had already placed breakfast on the dining table.
"Go and make your bed properly," Gu Feng said sternly to her as she approached the dining table to eat breakfast.
Lin Jiaying glanced doubtfully at the wrinkled bedsheet and crumpled blanket in the bedroom and said dismissively, "That's how I always make it." As she spoke, she reached for the milk on the table.
"No breakfast until you make that bed properly," Gu Feng said, shooting a sidelong glance at Lin Jiaying, his tone firm.
"Fine, I won't eat then," Lin Jiaying replied. She was already very dissatisfied with Gu Feng, and his performance during yesterday's kidnapping incident had further disappointed her with his identity as a soldier. Therefore, hearing Gu Feng order her around now made her quite unhappy.
Seeing that Lin Jiaying was about to get up and return to her bedroom, Gu Feng seemed to know what she intended to do and said in a no-nonsense tone, "You don't have to eat breakfast, but you must make the bed again."
"So you learned how to make a bed in the army? Do you have to show off to me?" Lin Jiaying was furious at Gu Feng's words. "How come you didn't act like a soldier when the criminals were around? Now you're pretending to be a soldier again?"
Gu Feng ignored Lin Jiaying's griping and walked straight to the dining table to start eating breakfast.
Lin Jiaying did not do as Gu Feng said. Instead, she picked up her schoolbag and prepared to leave.
Gu Feng glanced at the still messy cartoon-themed bed in the bedroom and said, "If you really don't know how to make a bed, I can call your mother and ask for half a day off for you. This morning, you can learn from me how to do it properly."
"Ugh, will you give it a rest? What does it matter to you whether I make my bed or not?" Hearing Gu Feng's words, Lin Jiaying became angry and slammed her schoolbag on the floor.
"As long as you live here, you must make your bed every morning after you get up, unless you don't live here anymore," Gu Feng said coldly, abruptly putting down the food in his hand.
"Fine, I won't live here then!" Lin Jiaying snorted coldly, picked up her schoolbag from the floor, and turned to leave.
Listening to the sound of Lin Jiaying slamming the door, Gu Feng was momentarily stunned, then frowned and continued eating breakfast while pondering something.
