Gu Feng refused to have dinner with Xia Wei for a simple reason: he had to go home and cook for Lin Jiaying.

Although Gu Feng felt no romantic attraction toward Lin Jiaying at all, he was seven years older than her, and she was still a student. Therefore, he felt it was his duty to cook for her every day.

As he had the day before, after leaving school, Gu Feng hailed a cab straight to the supermarket near Mingzhu Apartments.

After telling the driver the destination, Gu Feng leaned back in his seat and gazed out the window.

In the evening, the streets were packed with traffic, with no shortage of luxury cars among them. In an international metropolis like Hong Kong, seeing expensive cars on the street was completely normal. You could find any car that had ever been featured in a car magazine.

When Gu Feng got back with the groceries, Lin Jiaying was already home.

Gu Feng had only half-inserted the key, before he could turn it, the door was opened by Lin Jiaying. She gave him a slight smile and said, "You're back?"

Gu Feng nodded gently. "Why don't you go work on your homework for a bit? I'll let you know when dinner's ready."

"Let me help you?" Lin Jiaying bit her lip, snatching the plastic bag from his hand as she spoke.

Gu Feng closed the door, took off his coat, and walked into the kitchen. He saw that Lin Jiaying had already taken all the groceries out of the bag and laid them out in a basket.

"You go sit down and rest. I'll wash the vegetables," Lin Jiaying said with a grin, rolling up her sleeves. Her movements were clumsy, a dead giveaway she wasn't used to this kind of chore.

Hearing this, Gu Feng smiled and said, "Just put the washed vegetables over there. I'll cook."

"Okay," Lin Jiaying nodded softly. She wanted to offer to cook, but having never set foot in a kitchen before, she doubted whether the food she made would be edible. After some thought, she abandoned this impulsive idea.

A shrill ringtone caught Gu Feng's attention. He walked over to the coffee table, picked up his phone, and saw Qiao Gang's name on the screen.

"Hello," Gu Feng answered as he sat on the sofa.

"Feng-ge, it's all taken care of," Qiao Gang's voice came through. "That punk Zhou Mingwei has been involved in many similar cases before, and Yan Zhengchun managed to dig them all up. Now, the police are monitoring him 24/7. As soon as he's discharged, he's headed straight for jail."

"Gangzi, I appreciate you handling this," Gu Feng said with a smile.

"Feng-ge, are you messing with me? Since when are you so polite with me?" Qiao Gang sounded frustrated. "By the way, Yan Zhengchun knows how to get things done. Guess how he spun that beating you gave those guys?"

"How did he handle it?" Gu Feng asked.

"He fabricated evidence, claiming those three were trying to attack you, so it was self-defense on your part," Qiao Gang chuckled.

Gu Feng seemed to have already guessed this and wasn't surprised.

"Feng-ge, are you free tonight? Let's grab some drinks?" Qiao Gang suggested.

Gu Feng declined. "Not tonight, maybe another day. By the way, Gangzi, don't tell the others I'm here. They've all probably got their own lives now. Let them focus on their own things."

"Feng-ge, I was actually thinking of asking if we should call them all over. Think about it—you've been gone for three years. The guys are probably going nuts missing you. If they knew you were here, I guarantee some would commandeer fighter jets to get here."

Qiao Gang's words reminded Gu Feng of something, and he smiled. "Alright, I need to cook. I'll hang up now."

After hanging up, Gu Feng exhaled a pent-up breath and headed toward the bathroom. Passing Lin Jiaying's bedroom, he saw the room was now tidy. The comforter on the oversized cartoon bed was neatly made, exactly like his own.

Noticing this, Gu Feng paused, the corner of his mouth quirking into a knowing smile.

Dinner was simple—two dishes and a soup—but the flavors were excellent. Lin Jiaying, who was normally a picky eater, surprisingly ate two bowls of rice.

After dinner, before Gu Feng could speak, Lin Jiaying cleared the table and went to wash the dishes.

Ever since returning, Gu Feng had sensed Lin Jiaying was acting more obedient. Although he didn't know why, he felt happy. After all, she had been quite willful before.

After tidying the kitchen, Lin Jiaying came to the living room and glanced at Gu Feng reading a military magazine. "I'm going to do my homework."

"Go ahead. Get to bed early," Gu Feng looked up and smiled.

Lin Jiaying nodded obediently, bouncing into her bedroom while humming a tune. She was clearly in a good mood.

Seeing her enter her room, Gu Feng got up to make tea. It was premium Wuyi Mountain Da Hong Pao, but his tea-making skills were poor. For Gu Feng, tea wasn't about taste; it was for cultivating his mind.

Since he started six years ago, this small habit had helped him become much calmer.

    Suddenly, the phone rang again.

Hearing it, Gu Feng frowned, wondering who it could be. He didn't know many people in Hong Kong.

    It was an unfamiliar number.

    "Hello."

"Is this Teacher Gu?" A familiar voice came through. Gu Feng recognized it.

"Yes, it's me," Gu Feng replied, puzzled. "Ling Wei, is there something you need?"

"Teacher Gu, I've done what you asked. Teacher Xia has forgiven me," Ling Wei said.

Hearing this, Gu Feng's tone relaxed. "Ling Wei, I don't know why you treated Teacher Xia that way, but I hope you won't do it again."

"Teacher Gu, don't worry. I will never cause trouble for Teacher Xia again," Ling Wei's response surprised Gu Feng, but he understood after recalling that afternoon. Ling Wei was just a seventeen-year-old kid. Although rebellious, he wasn't the type to hold grudges.

Just as Gu Feng was about to say goodbye, Ling Wei spoke again. "Teacher Gu, I have something very important to tell you. Where are you now?"

"I'm at home," Gu Feng said, curious. "What is it?"

"Teacher Gu, I can't really explain it over the phone, but it's really important," Ling Wei sounded urgent. "Where do you live? I'll come now."

    Gu Feng frowned. "Mingzhu Apartments."

"Teacher Gu, wait for me at the entrance. I'll be there soon. I'll hang up now," Ling Wei said, ending the call.
