Chapter 040 【Gambler】
by 我本瘋狂It has been said that the richness of a city's nightlife is directly proportional to its prosperity. [Note: 'Drunk-Dew-Net']
As an international metropolis, Hong Kong is very prosperous, and its nightlife is equally vibrant.
Sitting in the taxi, Gu Feng saw many drunken men on the streets. Some were accompanied by friends, while others were with women. Comparatively, the latter seemed to be having more 'fun' than the former.
However, in reality, when a person is drunk, having a friend of the same sex by their side means they are not truly lonely, as that friend is likely a genuine one. If someone has sincere friends in this world, they will never feel alone.
But when a drunken man is accompanied by a female friend instead of his wife, he may appear to be living well on the surface, but deep down, he is very lonely. Otherwise, when he is drunk, he would be accompanied by a true friend or his wife, not a lover or an escort.
The taxi driver was a chatty person. After Gu Feng got in the car, he talked a lot, but seeing that Gu Feng wasn’t interested, he chose to remain silent and focused on driving.
Suddenly—
Gu Feng spotted a familiar figure on the street.
"Driver, stop the car for a moment," Gu Feng said with a frown.
The driver pulled over as instructed and followed Gu Feng’s gaze toward the side of the street, where he was surprised to see a beautiful woman. Behind her was a man—more precisely, an older man, dressed in old-fashioned, shabby clothes and looking disheveled.
At that moment, the older man was tugging at the woman’s arm, saying something, while the woman looked impatient, even angry.
"Do you know that woman?" the taxi driver instinctively asked Gu Feng.
Gu Feng didn’t answer the driver’s question, only staring puzzledly at the scene unfolding in the distance. The woman in the distance was Chen Minjun—the temperamental, unreasonable woman.
"Minjun, give me some more money. If you don’t, I’ll starve to death!" the older man said in a pitiful tone, clutching Chen Minjun’s shoulder.
Chen Minjun glared angrily at the older man and snapped, "I just gave you money yesterday, and today you’re broke again. Tell me, did you go gambling again?"
At her sharp rebuke, the older man lowered his head in embarrassment but quickly looked up again. "Minjun, don’t worry, I promise I won’t gamble this time."
"Dad, how many times have you said that to me?" Chen Minjun said helplessly. "Really, Dad, I’ve lost count of how many times you’ve told me the same thing. Ever since you started gambling, you’ve gambled away all the family's savings, you lost the house, and you’ve piled up a mountain of debt. Mom and I work hard every month to pay the rent and your loan sharks, hoping you’ll stop gambling. But you never listen. Every time I give you money, you go straight to the gambling den."
As she spoke, her eyes glistened with tears, but she held them back stubbornly, refusing to cry.
For a compulsive gambler, nothing matters except gambling—everything else is thrown to the wind.
Even though he saw his daughter’s distress and helplessness, the older man didn’t give up on asking for money. He continued to clutch Chen Minjun’s arm, begging like a beggar. "Minjun, I know I’ve let you and your mother down. But you have to believe me, this is the last time. I’ll never ask you for money again."
"Dad!!" Chen Minjun was beyond tears. She wanted to refuse the man harshly, but she couldn’t—she truly couldn’t. Because standing before her was the father who had brought her into this world and raised her, even though he had now become a hopeless gambler.
A few seconds later, Chen Minjun let out a heavy, frustrated sigh, took out her wallet, and handed the older man the last thousand Hong Kong dollars she had.
The older man’s eyes lit up as he took the money from Chen Minjun. He immediately let go of her and said with a smile, "Minjun, you go home first. Dad won’t be back for a while."
"Dad, are you going to gamble again?" Chen Minjun shouted hoarsely at the older man’s retreating figure.
The older man didn’t answer her. Perhaps all he could think about now was how to recoup his losses and strike it rich.
Suddenly—
The older man, running with his head down, bumped into a young man, who was followed by six or seven burly men.
"Sorry," the older man muttered without looking up, without even seeing what the young man looked like, as he tried to leave.
"Chen Guisheng, where do you think you’re going?" the young man grabbed the older man’s collar and sneered.
Chen Guisheng looked up at the young man, and his gaze froze. His body trembled uncontrollably, his pupils dilated in fear, and a look of utter terror crossed his face. He swallowed hard and stammered, "T-Tiger... Brother Tiger, I’ll pay you back next week."
"Smack!" Brother Tiger slapped Chen Guisheng without mercy, nearly knocking him to the ground.
Brother Tiger planted his foot on Chen Guisheng, showing no sympathy as he looked at the blood at the corner of the older man’s mouth. He said coldly, "Chen Guisheng, do you think I’m an idiot? Pay me next week? With what? I just saw your daughter give you money. Hand it over now!"
"Brother Tiger, I’ll definitely pay you next week!" For a gambler, having money doesn’t mean thinking about food or paying debts—it means thinking about how to win back more. Chen Guisheng was exactly that kind of person. Even though he was terrified of Brother Tiger, he didn’t want to part with the only thousand Hong Kong dollars he had.
"You asking for a beating?" Hearing this, Brother Tiger instinctively raised his foot and kicked Chen Guisheng hard. Chen Guisheng let out a scream and curled up in pain.
"Stop!" In the distance, Chen Minjun had already turned to leave but suddenly glanced back in the direction her father had disappeared. She saw Brother Tiger stepping on Chen Guisheng and immediately shouted, rushing toward Brother Tiger and his men.
Hearing Chen Minjun’s shout, Brother Tiger stopped kicking Chen Guisheng and turned his attention to her. When he saw her stunning figure, his eyes gleamed with lust, and a lecherous smile spread across his face.
Behind him, the burly men also smirked lustfully, their gazes filled with vulgar desire as they stared at Chen Minjun.
