On Dodo Island,
The Lightgreen Gem Dragon remained unconscious.
Leo dove into the volcanic crater's magma. After ten days of condensed volcanic magic accumulation, it was ready to enjoy a rich feast of magic.
Liszt asked the Grand Sprite Ai Ni perched on his shoulder, "How do you find this environment? Should we plant the parasitic grass here?"
Ai Ni sniffed with its tiny nose and shook its head. "Eh?"
It meant that while it loved the fire-attribute magic at the crater and Leo trained here, the soil lacked water.
"Then where on Dodo Island would be suitable?"
After picking and choosing, Ai Ni settled on a spot halfway up the mountain and planted its parasitic tree. In moments, a thirty-meter-tall tree sprouted, towering above the surrounding Human Skull Trees. Liszt then took out the nest and replaced it on a branch, placing a Flame Dragonbird egg inside.
"Acheronides, let’s make a few more trips to Dodo Island to determine whether natural or artificial incubation works better for the Flame Dragonbird egg."
Acheronides nodded.
Suddenly, Ai Ni cried, "Ai Ni eh!"
"Hmm?" Liszt sensed Ai Ni’s emotional fluctuation. "You’ve seen Flame Dragonbirds breathing fire to incubate their eggs?"
"Eh!"
Ai Ni flapped its wings, circled the nest, and pretended to be a Flame Dragonbird. It landed on a nearby branch, puffed up its cheeks, and mimicked the fire-breathing incubation. It even shifted positions, showing how two birds took turns.
Liszt found the vivid demonstration fascinating. "So Flame Dragonbirds use fire to hatch their eggs! Acheronides, should we try it?"
Acheronides pointed at the nest. "Brother, look—the branches resemble those of the Phoenix Perch Tree. Let’s test if fire burns the nest. If not, Ai Ni’s description might be correct."
"Makes sense!"
Liszt couldn’t breathe fire, but his Fire Dragon Aura conjured flames. He directed them at the nest, and as expected, the flame-resistant branches didn’t burn.
He placed the egg back inside and applied heat directly, observing with his Magic Eye. The egg absorbed fire-attribute magic, its inner energy flowing as if nurturing life. After half an hour, it stopped absorbing.
When Liszt continued, Ai Ni flew over, shaking its head. "Eh!"—signaling enough heat.
"So about half an hour per day?"
Ai Ni couldn’t explain; it just knew to stop him from overheating.
Still, it had been a great help. Liszt rewarded it with jade, which Ai Ni hugged and gnawed on happily.
"Now that we know how to hatch it, we don’t need the nest. I can heat the egg anytime," he said, reaching to remove it.
But Ai Ni cried again, "Eh!"
"Not allowed to remove it?"
Here’s the improved translation incorporating the expert suggestions:
"Hey!" Ai Ni gestured randomly, trying to say there was some connection between the Phoenix Perch Tree and the bird eggs, and that the nest was the best place for them.
The eggs seemed beneficial to Ai Ni too.
Unfortunately, Ai Ni's explanation was disjointed, and Liszt couldn’t quite follow. After several questions, Ai Ni paced nervously, unsure how to explain.
Acheronides suddenly spoke: "Brother, Acheronides senses a symbiotic relationship between Ai Ni’s spirit bug and the Flame Dragonbird eggs. Their auras form a delicate miniature Magic Web, creating a stable active field that promotes mutual growth."
"Is that so?" Liszt was surprised—spirit bugs could connect with super dragon beasts.
Since Acheronides had confirmed it and Ai Ni wanted the eggs, he relaxed and placed all three in the nest, telling Ai Ni: "The Flame Dragonbird eggs are yours to care for. Tend them well. I’ll check on them daily."
"Got it!"
"If Acheronides comes, same rules."
"Okay!"
Ai Ni agreed eagerly, feeling life was perfect—nutritious jade powder to eat, eggs to boost growth, and a Fire Dragon to pet often. Truly wonderful.
Its joy rubbed off on Liszt.
Remembering something, he took Ai Ni to where the Lightgreen Gem Dragon slept. "If you like touching dragons, here’s another."
Ai Ni looked at the dragon, cautiously touching its scales before retreating: "Ai Ni likes Leo." Meaning it disliked this one.
"Fair enough." Liszt nodded, realizing spirit bugs and dragons had affinities—each preferred different types.
No wonder spirits like Ash and Jie La, who’d met Leo, never warmed to him.
Incompatible affinities.
When Leo emerged from the volcano, Liszt left Dodo Island without Ai Ni—spirit bugs couldn’t stray far from their trees long. Eight hundred kilometers to Black Horse Island exceeded their range; prolonged absence would wither the tree.
So Ai Ni stayed to tend the eggs.
With no large predators and a sleeping dragon’s presence driving away smaller creatures, the island was safe.
Returning to Black Horse Island,
Cris Truth arrived at Thorn Castle, presenting the upgraded binary Magic-Web core device. The new version replaced dials with triggers.
Two straight handles adorned the box.
Three magicians operated it: one reading binary codes aloud, one casting fire magic, one water magic. They moved the handles in sequence, activating runes inside via linkages to transmit messages.
These were the operators.
The code-reader also received messages, noting the compass’s magic reactions and translating them.
With practice, one magician could manage—feeding codes continuously with water magic in one hand, fire in the other. But the device’s basic design limited speed, keeping efficiency low.
Future improvements might achieve radio-like functionality, then advance to video calls transmitting sight and sound.
Perhaps even teleportation magic eventually. Examining the new core, Liszt announced immediately: "Now that it works reliably, select trustworthy mages from the Guild to sail with the explorers and chart new islands!"
