Chapter 668: Guardian of the Ugly Fish
by adminNow that he had mastered the Frostbite Dragon Slayer Sword, Liszt could now wear it daily at his waist. However, a bare blade looked awkward.
Thus, Alvin Eaglesword’s next job was to forge a scabbard for the Frostbite Dragon Slayer Sword.
As Liszt idly swung the sword, he suddenly recalled the massive harpoon he had retrieved from the Yuchou Temple—its Undead Yuchou still hadn’t been studied. He promptly left the Knight Academy and headed to a secluded coastal area, pulling the harpoon from his gemstone space.
The five-meter-long harpoon was thrust into the sandy shore.
Next, Liszt took out the Soul Jar and tilted the teapot spout downward. A glowing mist spilled out, taking the shape of a curvy young woman—Virginia Truth, the sister of Curtis Truth.
"Ah, out again! Viscount Liszt, it feels like ages since we last met," Virginia remarked, now used to living as a soul.
Liszt chuckled. "It has been a while."
As his strength grew and the number of magicians in his territory increased, their research capabilities steadily improved. Virginia, being just an ordinary magician, played an increasingly minor role, so Liszt rarely summoned her. He’d even thought about giving her and the Soul Jar to Acheronides to study.
Today, he called her out to seek her advice on how to summon the Undead Yuchou from the harpoon and bind it as a guardian weapon.
He didn’t care much for the Undead Yuchou’s weak fighting skills, but it could still cast advanced magic, making it as strong as a great magician. Putting it on his flagship, the *Sunset*, would provide a decent escort during sea voyages.
Whether encountering sea monsters or pirates, the Undead Yuchou’s ambushes could come in handy.
"Virginia, now that you’re used to your soul form, can you sense the powerful soul hidden within this harpoon?"
Virginia floated toward the harpoon, her ghostly body phasing through it. "I feel a cold, deathly energy," she said in surprise, "but the soul within feels incredibly weak. Viscount Liszt, could you tell me the origin of this harpoon?"
"It comes from the ancient ruins of the Yuchou Temple. This harpoon houses an Undead Yuchou—it once guarded the temple until I defeated it. I think it’s still in there, so I want to release it and see if I can control it, using it to safeguard my ship."
"An Undead Yuchou? Maybe I can wake it up."
"Then I’ll leave it to you."
"Are you sure you want to wake it here? It might still attack you."
"No need to worry. If I killed it once, I can kill it again," Liszt replied with a faint smile. Though he hadn’t personally slain it the first time, beating an Undead Yuchou on land was easy.
Virginia said no more.
Her glow flickering, her ghostly form touched the harpoon. Moments later, the harpoon emitted the same glow, followed by a twisted green silhouette projecting from it—turning into a ten-meter-tall Undead Yuchou. However, compared to its previous ferocity, it now appeared slow and blank.
"Is it... having trouble on land?"
"Probably not," Virginia floated beside it, tiny next to it. "Viscount Liszt, I believe your initial defeat severely damaged its soul, leaving it broken and mindless."
"So, this Undead Yuchou is useless now?"
"Yes."
"Too bad—such a huge harpoon, wasted." Liszt shook his head slightly. "Virginia, I must attend the banquet now. Go back into the Soul Jar for now—we’ll talk again when I have time."
But Virginia hesitated, clearly torn.
Liszt frowned at her.
Finally, as if making a decision, she spoke. "Viscount Liszt, if you want to control the Undead Yuchou and this harpoon... perhaps I can help."
"What kind of help?"
"I can replace the soul of the Undead Yuchou with my own. Within this ghostly apparition of the Undead Yuchou, only the core is the actual soul, while the outer layers are some unknown energy I can't comprehend. As long as I replace the core soul, I can control the entire Undead Yuchou."
Liszt was somewhat surprised but quickly responded, "If I’m not mistaken, undead and souls are different. Undead beings retain their living powers, transformed into a spectral state, but their core souls aren't particularly strong. As you can see, the Undead Yuchou’s soul has been destroyed, but its living power persists."
"I understand."
"So, are you truly willing to replace the Undead Yuchou’s soul and become such an ugly undead monster?"
Virginia nodded earnestly. "Compared to being trapped in the soul storage tank, unaware of the passage of time, I’d much rather have some freedom. The Undead Yuchou is indeed hideous, but for a soul like mine, beauty and ugliness hold no meaning. Viscount Liszt, please let me take the place of the Undead Yuchou and become your guardian!"
A 36D girl's soul was about to become the soul of a ten-meter-tall Yuchou.
The visual change might be jarring, but Liszt had no reason to stop her. Rather than confining her in the soul storage tank, it was better to grant her limited freedom in the form of the Undead Yuchou. "Very well, I agree."
"Thank you for your generosity, Viscount Liszt!" Virginia bowed solemnly before resolutely flying into the towering, empty-eyed Undead Yuchou.
She merged with the green magical glow, quickly locating the fragmented soul and merging with it.
The next second, the Undead Yuchou’s ghostly form convulsed.
Then, the magic aura seemed to shift slightly. The originally grotesque and ferocious Undead Yuchou now showed traces of Virginia's likeness in its expression.
After fifteen minutes of silence, the Undead Yuchou slowly spoke, "Li...zzt...in...stinct..."
The words were slurred and unclear, but after a slight adjustment, it spoke more coherently: "Viscount Liszt, I have taken the place of the Undead Yuchou."
"How does it feel?"
"It's manageable. Compared to my previous state, I now experience physical sensations I haven’t felt in a long time." She reached out and picked up the harpoon embedded in the ground. "I’ve merged with the Undead Yuchou’s broken memories - mostly blank spaces. Only a few high-level spells remain."
Liszt grew intrigued. "How does casting differ from how humans do it?"
"There are some differences, but the underlying principles are similar. Especially since these appear to be high-level spells—I've never encountered this casting method before... No, I’ll need some time to adapt before I can use them properly." In life, Virginia had only been an ordinary mage, unfamiliar with dynamic spell formations and unable to cast advanced magic.
"Take all the time you need to adjust. Document the casting techniques while you’re at it. But can you maintain this form indefinitely?"
"Not exactly. My soul is weakening. In about half an hour, I won’t be able to sustain the Undead Yuchou’s body. But I can withdraw into the harpoon to replenish my soul power. Once I’ve gathered enough, I can emerge again... Oh, Viscount Liszt, this harpoon is called the Tearing Staff."
Despite being a five-tined harpoon, it was named the Tearing Staff.
