Chapter 888: An Official Letter
by adminWhether it's the Feng Qi Wu Tong Grand Sprite Ai Ni or the Wan Dou Grand Sprite Ai Xi, both have begun undergoing dragon evolution, though success remains uncertain.
Cases of Grand Sprites evolving successfully are exceedingly rare, but fortunately, failed evolution doesn’t result in death.
"I wonder if Ai Ni and Ai Xi can succeed under the power of fate. Come to think of it, I have two Grand Sprites in the process of evolution, yet despite having so many spirit bugs, it feels like ages since any of them evolved into a Grand Sprite," Liszt pondered.
The last instance was last year when Nami evolved into the Red-Tree Grand Sprite.
Even the evolution of spirit bugs into spirit bugs has been stagnant—the most recent occurrence was also last year, when the rubber bug triplets evolved into three distinct rubber spirit bugs.
"Perhaps I haven’t paid enough attention, and the power of fate hasn’t been directed this way, leaving the spirits to evolve at their natural rate... If that’s the case, the power of fate I can wield doesn’t seem particularly strong... Then again, if it can even manipulate dragons, why not a few spirit bugs?"
Unable to unravel the mystery—whether about the Smoke Dragon or the power of fate—it all felt too elusive.
He didn’t dwell on it too much.
At this stage, the construction of the Mind Island–Reed Marsh magic teleportation array was his top priority, alongside the search for the maneating tree Dragon Spirit.
Emily kept him updated on the latest progress in tracking the maneating trees.
She even sent samples of the trees—slender trees almost indistinguishable from ordinary shrubs, except for their twining trunks and branches. Though tough and of decent quality, they were too thin for large-scale crafting.
"Maneating trees are rare in the forests and move incredibly fast—they can burrow underground!" Emily’s report highlighted their peculiar ability.
They slithered into the earth like snakes, leaving barely any trace. It seemed less like physical digging and more like an earth-attribute magic. Yet, no magical energy was detected in the samples, nor any movable structures when dissected.
The captured maneating trees remained motionless on the ground, while those that escaped burrowed away swiftly, vanishing without a trace.
"The ones caught don’t move, the ones that escape burrow, they’re not animals, and they have no magic." Liszt’s fascination grew. "This must be the work of the maneating tree Dragon Spirit—but is this its innate ability?"
At the Blue Sky Pillar Palace, he had seen the Blue Gem family’s Oat Dragon Spirit and the former Bull family’s Juniper Dragon Spirit.
Those Dragon Spirits stood a meter tall, increasingly human-like in shape, though their bodies remained gem-like, like large gemstones. Their intelligence matched humans—they wore clothes, were versatile, assisted in managing spirits, and even helped care for the Blue Gem Dragons.
They didn’t wield magic, but their innate abilities granted them some magical means—sowing seeds, accelerating crop growth, improving species quality, and so on.
Yet none could make their crops fly or burrow.
"Maybe this maneating tree Dragon Spirit is hacking the system?" Liszt suddenly recalled the three rubber spirit bugs. "The rubber triplets can unleash Three-Phase Power to instantly heal rubber trees. Could the maneating tree Dragon Spirit have a similar ability, making the trees burrow and flee?"
If so, capturing this Dragon Spirit would be tricky.
Normally, spirits are caught because their host plants (spirit bugs) can’t move, forcing them to stay put. But if the maneating tree Dragon Spirit can make its host move, spotting humans from afar and fleeing—worse, it bears a grudge against humans, given its name.
The Moon Slayers named it "maneating tree" after losing many to its grasp.
Yet Liszt’s examination of the samples revealed no "maneating" function. Plants that consume flesh, carrion, or insects require digestive structures—none of which the maneating tree possessed, unless it buried corpses beneath its roots for slow absorption.
"Rather than literal man-eating, I’d believe the ‘maneating’ is the Dragon Spirit’s revenge against the Moon Slayers," Liszt speculated.
Historically, the Moon Slayers used spirits to refine magic powder for learning spells—perhaps some were kin of this Dragon Spirit. Thus, it retaliated, reducing the River Tribe from a major power to a minor one.
"If that’s true, I might need to step in personally to claim what’s rightfully my mission reward!" The idea galvanized him.
His mind made up, he acted immediately.
Handing off the establishment of the magic portal to Acheronides, he mounted the Invisible Dragon Bard and personally joined the pursuit of the Dragon Spirit of the man-eating tree.
Vanishing into the material boundary, he closely followed the Giant Elephant Knights who were turning the earth upside down in search of the man-eating trees.
He intended to use the Crystal White Trace to determine whether the man-eating trees emitted any magical energy signature when burrowing underground, then use that aura to pinpoint the location of the Dragon Spirit of the man-eating tree.
"You little rascal, stop being naughty and come out already!"
...
When the grey cast iron dragon appeared on Blue Dragon Island,
the news spread like wildfire, flying from the Sapphire Duchy across the sea to the three kingdoms and numerous duchies of the Legendary Continent.
In the grand hall of the royal palace of the Kingdom of the Eagle, the Eagle King smashed a crystal goblet against a pillar, shattering it into pieces: "Who can tell me, who can tell me why the grey cast iron dragon ended up in Liszt Flame’s hands, and why Duke Piero was taken prisoner!"
None of the ministers in the palace dared to respond, and the involved parties—Alonso Cyclamen had already rushed to the border to take command, while Alex Bai Kou Tie was escorting the body of Loyel Zitong to the Purple Copper Duchy.
None was present.
Thus,
the Eagle King’s question was doomed to go unanswered. He didn’t even know how Piero and the grey cast iron dragon had been captured, nor how Liszt had so swiftly mounted the grey cast iron dragon—he was no Dragon Knight, but having been raised among dragons, he knew well the difficulty of riding one.
Yet, among the Sapphire flies that stuck like leeches, an anomaly had appeared who had ridden four dragons in succession.
Not long ago, he had been discussing with the knights how to contain Liszt, and in what seemed like an instant, the man had gone from three dragons to four—how could they possibly contain him now?
"Who can tell me!"
The Eagle King did not roar, but his tone was no different from one, his fury so intense that his bushy beard quivered with rage. The noble lords serving as ministers remained silent, allowing the Eagle King to pant with fury until the hall was so quiet one could hear a pin drop.
Taking a deep breath, the Eagle King looked at the useless ministers below and just barely managed to rein in his emotions.
He knew that questioning these ministers, who had not participated in the dragon-slaying battle, would get him no answers. He could only swiftly send letters demanding explanations from Alonso and Alex.
But before he could dismiss the ministers, a knight on duty outside the hall loudly reported: "Your Majesty, an urgent dispatch from the Sapphire Duchy has arrived!"
"Sapphire... urgent dispatch!" The Eagle King’s expression darkened further. "What now? Is Andrew, the Fly King from across the sea, daring to challenge me now? Knight, enter and read this urgent dispatch aloud—I want to hear what Andrew has to say!"
The knight cautiously entered the hall, opened the urgent dispatch, and recited mechanically: "Master of all seas, Lord of all islands, the future great king of the Fire Kingdom, Knight of the Fire Dragon, Knight of the Invisible Dragon, Knight of the Grey Cast Iron Dragon, Pale Emerald Dragon Knight—Liszt Flame..."
